IRS e-filing is changing for 2026. What do I need to know?
The IRS is retiring its old FIRE e-file system. FIRE stops accepting returns on November 19, 2026. Starting January 1, 2027, all 1099 and 1098 returns, including corrections and prior-year returns, must be e-filed through the new IRS IRIS system. EASITax 2026 creates IRIS files for you, so very little changes in how you use the software.
Can I use my old FIRE TCC code?
No. FIRE TCC codes do not carry over to IRIS. You must apply for a new IRIS TCC from the IRS before you can e-file. Apply early: the IRS says most applications are processed within a day or two, but some take up to 45 days. IRIS TCC application
Should I apply as an Issuer or a Transmitter?
Apply as an Issuer if you only file returns for your own company. An Issuer TCC can only be used for the company and EIN on the application. Apply as a Transmitter if you file returns for other companies, such as an accountant or bookkeeper filing for clients.
Why was my e-file rejected for the payer name or EIN?
The payer's EIN on your returns must match the EIN on your IRIS TCC application, and the payer name should exactly match the name the IRS has on file for that EIN. Check spelling, punctuation, and abbreviations such as Inc. or LLC.
Am I required to e-file?
If you file 10 or more information returns in total for the year (all 1099s, W-2s, and similar forms combined), the IRS requires you to e-file them. Below that, you may still print and mail paper forms.
Does the IRIS change affect my W-2s?
No. W-2s and W-3s are still filed with the Social Security Administration, not through IRIS. EASITax prints W-2s and creates the SSA e-file for you.
When are my forms due?
W-2s, W-3s, and 1099-NEC forms are due to both recipients and the government by January 31. Most other 1099s are due to recipients by January 31 and to the IRS by February 28 on paper or March 31 if you e-file. If a due date falls on a weekend or holiday, it moves to the next business day.
Windows warned me when I downloaded EASITax. Is it safe?
Yes. Windows shows a warning such as "Make sure you trust ETax2026.exe" for programs that have not been downloaded by many people yet, which happens with each new year's version. In Edge, click the three dots (...) next to the download and choose Keep. If a blue Microsoft Defender screen appears, click More info and then Run anyway. Always download EASITax only from 1099TaxSoftware.com.
I bought EASITax last year. How do I renew?
Use the link in your reorder email, or click "Click here to load cart with last year's order" at the top of our home page. Your cart is filled in with last year's software and forms at your renewal price, and you can change anything before checking out.
How many forms should I order?
Order by the number of forms you need to print, not the number of pages. Most 1099 and W-2 laser forms have more than one form on each page. The state requirements chart on our home page shows which states need their own copy.
Can I email forms to my recipients instead of mailing them?
Yes. With the Email-PDF add-on, EASITax can email each recipient their copy as a PDF file, so there is nothing to print, fold, or mail. Recipients must agree to receive their forms electronically.
